On Friday, 26 November we celebrated our WorldSkills learner’s achievements with a watch party in the UCG corner lounge, with their friends, family and tutors attending. Steph McGovern made the announcement live on her TV show at 4pm.

Grimsby Institute students Courteney Bett won Gold and Scarlett Roberts was awarded Silver in Beauty Therapy. Joshua Smith won Silver in Sheet Metalwork Technology. Another massive well done to Beauty student Millie Jacklin who was awarded with ‘highly commended Beauty Therapy practitioner’ and was just 1 point away from Bronze.

More than 400 young students and apprentices from across the UK took part in the WorldSkills UK National Finals. Over 60 competitions were played out in November at 21 venues across the country. Competitors underwent a seven-month process of regional heats and intensive training before presenting their skills in the finals. What an incredible result and a real testimony to the hard work of our students and their tutors.

Rachel McLean, Curriculum Manager of Hair and Beauty at Grimsby Institute said: “We are so proud that three beauty learners made it to the national finals, it’s wonderful to see their talents recognised in this way. Well done Courteney and Scarlett for their medals, and Millie for representing the college in such a professional way! You have all made us really proud!”

WorldSkills is a biennial ‘skills olympics’ where brilliant youngsters from across the UK have the opportunity to prove themselves to be the best of the best, winning medals in skills competitions. WorldSkills supports young people across the world via competitions-based training, assessment and benchmarking, with members’ national teams ultimately testing their ability to achieve world-class standards.

Ben Blackledge, Deputy CEO of WorldSkills UK, said: “These young people are a real inspiration. They are an example to us all and should be celebrated. To have excelled after such a difficult year shows that their dedication and skills are truly excellent. Skills are the lifeblood of every economy, creating high quality jobs, rewarding careers, and our competitions are proof that there is amazing talent in every part of the UK.”

We are really proud of all of our students and their tutors for their hard work and determination, these results speak for themselves. Congratulations!
