The Grimsby Institute proudly announces the beginning of a year-long celebration as it commemorates its 80th anniversary.

To launch this momentous year, individuals gathered to plant a symbolic oak tree, representing the institution’s growth, resilience, and enduring commitment to education and the community.

The oak tree planting ceremony, held on Monday 18th March, in collaboration with NE Lincs Council saw the planting of 12 trees by both staff and students, one of which was the oak tree. The trees are part of North East Lincolnshire Council’s ‘Tree Strategy’ which reflects the joint dedication to ensuring that communities have a high-quality sustainable environment.

Since 1944, the Grimsby Institute has evolved into one of the largest colleges in the country, standing at the heart of the local community, and having in those 80 years touched the lives of most local people, whether through education, training, employment, or public events.

A far cry from its humble beginnings with a total of less than 2000 students, the Grimsby Institute now boasts over 16,500 students doing over 93,000 qualifications. The Institute has evolved hugely by merging with other colleges and is now part of a bigger group called the TEC Partnership, which has colleges that span the East Coast.

Throughout the coming year, a series of exciting events are planned to honour the rich history, celebrate achievements, and look ahead to the future.

“As we celebrate our 80th anniversary, we reflect on the impact we’ve had on countless lives over the decades,” said Ann Hardy, CEO of the TEC Partnership. “The planting of this oak tree symbolizes our ongoing commitment to education and enhancing the lives of our community.”

The community is invited to join in commemorating this significant milestone and celebrating achievements. A community fun day event will be held in June 2024, where doors will be opened to the public to unveil the new Grim and Havelock statue.

Stay tuned for updates on upcoming events and opportunities to participate in the anniversary celebrations.
